Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. She was also raised by her maternal grandmother, and was raised being an all-single child. Scott graduated from The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was studying secondary education. She hoped she would become an English High School teacher. However, she was not able to achieve the dream after completing three years of study and becoming a teaching assistant in college, she decided to leave. She began her career as a spoken-word performer and performing in live poetry readings. She then teamed up to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me, their collaborative song was written by the duo. During a Roots show she was spotted as an artist. Afterwards she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In the Canada tour of The Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She signed as the label's first artist.
